Okay. It's over.

Ow.

Why, for the love of everything fucking holy do people willingly subject themselves to the torture of reconstructive surgery?

This morning, I checked under the bandage I was given after the surgery to discover a gaping, raw, dime-sized quarter-inch deep hole in my face. There are pictures and they will be on my website soon, and they are AWESOME GROSS!

Anyway, I was highly skeptical that anyone was going to be able to simply suture something that huge shut, but I headed over to the plastic surgeon anyway, paid my $15 co-pay and went in for the re-construction.

The surgeon shot me up with what could only be described as the most painful anesthetic administration I'd ever experienced, and then he set to re-constructing the wound.

I'll make it quick; he did it.

My kisser has a long series of stitches where there was once a divot, and it's currently crusted in black sticky blood.

Lovely, but at least I'll look like I haven't been shot.

On the down side, it feels like my entire face is being dragged with wires into my upper lip region now.

And it hurts.

Not as much as it did a few hours ago, mind you, but it still fucking hurts.

It feels tight and if I eat, drink, smile or talk too much, I run the risk of bleeding a bit.

Anyway, the stitches will come out in a week and hopefully my right upper-lip won't be stuck in a permanent snarl.

All-in-all it was the most pain-filled $15 I've ever spent.

For the benefit of those who don't follow the Tekdiff twitter feed, the surgery was a rousing (if by rousing you mean kinda gross but effective) success! I'm free FREE, of cancer of the mush. I went in early, got my kisser numbed within an inch of it's pugly life and then a skilled surgeon carved out those godamned undisciplined cells. They even cauterized the heavily bleeding vessels with some kind of electric tweezer device, filling my nostrils with the acrid odor of sparks and sizzled blood. Mmmm-MM!

Anyway, I'm done with the removal part, now I just regulate the pain until I see the plastic surgeon tomorrow so's he can stitch up the hole next to my nose. More come the morn!

So, anyway, I've been intertube free for a day, as my ISP had some sort of meltdown. It was interesting to have a go at life without the option of distracting myself at a whim, even if just for a day. I could get to like it.. or not.
Tomorrow is the cancer surgery day. I get up at 'fuck off' o'clock, to get hunks of my face carved off.
Yay, me.
In addition, the construction devils are pouring concrete forms to replace the street's missing driveway entrances, so I can't park near my house for the weekend. And there's the noise.
Sigh.

Oh god... the noise...

Okay, now then. They've been resurfacing the road out front for about 7 hours a day now.
Since Monday.

Argh.

I think I've snapped a bit. The noise brings insanity. I see visions of broken roads and cyclopean hazard cones...

     Anyway, the thing is, there's no show this week because of the DAMN NOISE. So I'll be working this weekend preparing for next week's show. Which I hope to have done before Thursday when the face surgery happens.
I'm sorry if that plan falls through as well, as they clearly aren't done with their infernal machinations out front. I never knew a simple steamroller could be so... horribly... horribly... loud...

     I've seen it...heard it... I've watched the very foundations of my home tremble... Just as in the book...
Alhazred knew... They must have had road work back then... Donkey, and mules, probably, but still...

I can see them now.. GOD! in their orange vests and yellow plastic helmets! They're coming!

For the benefit of those of you who don't read the forum page (tekdiff.freeforums.org) here's the update. I went to a sci-fi con last weekend and had a bit of an emotional breakdown (lifelong problems with social and personal anxiety coming to call). Nothing too catastrophic, but I realized I need help if I want to enjoy the remainder of my life. So, I scheduled a meeting with my doctor to set me up with a therapist. Anyway, I needed a week off, and I took it. There will be a new Tekdiff this coming Friday, so don't fret now. And, in case you were wondering, the con was actually a lot of fun. Apart from the crying, freak-out thing I mean. Sorry again.

Important Announcement: The return of the Schedule...

Okay, the consensus is in and I'm returning to a Friday release schedule this week. Here's how it'll go: New Account starting on the 6th, new Tekdiff the following week and alternating thereafter. The free form thing was an interesting failure. It started off okay, but the overall quality of the comedy show has dipped (plummeted, actually) and I find it super-hard to first get a head of steam, record, stop, and then shift gears to a different style of episode all in a five day period. Besides, I'm useless on Mondays and so I end up rushing to get something out on Tues/Wed and I get sloppy. Then I need to get a second episode going on Thurs/fri, blah, blah blah...it all feels a bit slap-dash of late. And this past show, while not what I'd call bad, wasn't particularly good either. And if i don't feel proud of my shows then there's no point. I was supposed to be getting better, and It's not working out that way. Also there have been complaints about the shortness of the new episodes not creating a proper flow like before, and people miss the end of the episode personal updates. Those criticisms are spot-on, as far as I'm concerned. So, the comedy isn't as creative and as funny and the Account is getting stale and snagging on story chunks instead of moving forward. And It's leaving me with little time to do other things like correspond with fans, update the site, and just do stuff. So it's back to the 15 min minimum Friday releases. There may be occasional oddball mini-shows in-between there, but it's time to focus myself and get back to craftsmanship again. In fact, I'm actually plannig out the episodes a month in advance, now. Susan's recovering from the surgery and needs me to do everything and needed to go to the doctor today, there's a handyman knocking stuff around in the basement, and the weather, while not sucking as hard as previously feared, still sucks like a pressure pump. Add to that the fact that I've had little sleep and I've been asked to play substitute team member for a geek-fest trivia challenge that we have no chance of winning on Saturday, and I think I'm just gonna hold off on any new material this week. So for those of you who's interested, let me clue you in on the sad pathetic present of your favorite podcast and why It's becoming a bit of a struggle to keep my enthusiasm up about doing the show... I've been doing the show since late Feb 2005, and I've seen a slow but steady climb in listenership. However upon consulting with a few fellowpodcasters, I discovered that my #'s were rather obnoxiously low without cause. At the peak of my subcription level, I hit about 2000 listeners a month, whereas other podcasts who hadn't been around as long as mine were routinely getting 3 or 4 times that listenership a week. I couldn't quite fiqure out what to make of this for the longest time. Perhaps the kind of comedy I was doing was of no interest to all but a few people. Several times i thought of giving up, but I wasn't ready to give in just yet. Now, don't get me wrong; big #'s is not my primary reason for doing Tekdiff. I do this out of a love of audio storytelling, and because I enjoy entertainig people no matter how few they are... But, let me be honest, I've never been a roaring success at any of my creative endeavors, and even when I stuck with them I remained cloaked in total obscurity, not even able to get my friends to look/listen to my work when I handed them free copies. I've never known what it is about my personality that renders me forgettable, and i have learned that never is this dismissal personal, but there you are... I shout and no one pays attention. This podcast represents the closest thing to an actual tangible audience I've ever managed to hold sway over for any period of time, and even so It's been an uphill battle to get people to listen in (including my friends). My ray of hope in this scenario was the impending release of iTunes 4.9, which would expose my show to a whole new range of listeners, and would hopefully make the grind of the last 5 months of production seem even more worth it. But, as anyone who's checked iTunes has discovered, no Tekdiff in the directory. All right, I didn't thake it personally, but in my attempt to get my show listed with Apple's killer app, a shocking fact revealed itself to me... SInce I started Tekdiff, iPodder.org has been my primary listing space (though I have signed on with others) and as it turns out, the comedy directory at iPodder.org does not work with any of the iPodder programs except iPodderX. This means that only Mac OS X 10.2 or higher users running the paid for iPodder X shareware program could ever happen across my show by accident from within the aggregator. All mac iPodder users and ALL Windows users were prevented from accessing the list of comedy podcasts from their programs. They would have had to come across me some other way entirely. On top of that, it seems that iTunes uses the iPodder system to updated their listings and lo and behold! No comedy podcasts from iPodder made it if they were listed exclusively there. This means that my show was hobbled from it's inception, with almost no hope of finding an audience, and now, as podcast subscriptions soar, I remain totally unknown. Wait, it gets better. Not only is my fan base not increasing, it's actually contracting at a depressing rate. You see, it seems iPodder X users (where 90% of my listeners came from) have all upgreded to iTunes, and have not resubscribed to Tekdiff. I now have fewer listeners on a weekly basis than I did in the 1st 2 weeks of the show going online. So there you have it. 5 Months of fairly hard work producing a scripted, highly produced program and my reward is, well, nothing. Nada. Bupkus. Well, nothing Except for those of you wonderful listeners who enjoy my show each week. Thanks you so much from the botton of my sticky heart for those of you who listen in and vote and drop me the occasional line and give me a chance. It makes me feel like I'm having an impact and helps to dull the ache of realization that my show is possibly doomed to total obscurity forever. I promise I will continue to do Tekdiff until the ideas give out and my mind dies, which judging by my notes won't be for about 50 years. Keep tuning in, you guys are the tits! New show is up and weighs in at a whoppin' 24 mins. With a little assist again from John "Ricky Russian" Henry. John wrote and performed "The letter to the World" bit and The reply. I merely added commentary. We both wrote and performed "Zoo Patrol" The part about mummies was all me.

How to do it.

So, in case anybody is wondering, I used Apple's Garageband to record this here show, which allows me to do all the multilayering of voices and create decent music as backdrop elements. If you want to use this method in Garageband (this method may aslo work in Sony's acid, but I'm not familiar with the newer versions of that program or how it relates to iTunes, which is an essential component of how I work), here's a recommendation for sketch comedy specific recordings. Create each sketch as a seprate song file and export it to iTunes with a file name indicating which podcast it belongs to. When you've got all your files done, create a new song file in GB, and open iTunes with all your show files in a playlist specifically for them (or the default that GB creates will do). Put ITunes and GB's windows right next to each other, and drag the song files from iTunes to GB's track window. Put each of the files in their own new track (just drag and drop them one under the other). Doing this will allow you to easily put sketches in a new order and drop new material in without having to shift everything (espicially the volume controls which don't move when you shift the loops and elements...APPLE, yeah I'm talkin' to you!). Then do all your post production, and do a new mix and export to iTunes and then make an MP3 for up load.

Now then. The previous post is the Podcast feed for Teknikal Diffikulties, which is a ressurection of a Realaudio show I did about 5 years ago. That one was live.. this one 'aint. It's comedy oriented but I hope to expand it's parameters in some direction or another soon. I wrote the whole friggin' thing myself, and did about 90% of the voices except for the wife on the bit about reporters, which was performed by my lovely and talented wife Susan Grandys, and I got some more creative and acting support from John (Ricky Russian) Henry, on Zoo Patrol. He did the voices of Danny and Brett. It was recorded with Garageband on an eMac, with Audio technica XLR dynamic mics, and thru a Radio Shack 4-channel DJ mixer. If any tech heads need model numbers I can provide them but I'm not sure why you'd want them. My audio skills are Hella shitty. I doubt the equipment is a reflection on the barely passable mix job I did. Live and learn.
